Goldfinch on mullein

As bright yellow as these birds are in the summer, I prefer their elegant winter plumage. Look closely at this picture – if your device allows, zoom in. Look at the precision outline on his wingtips. Examine the delicacy of his feathers. He may not be flashy this time of the year, but doesn’t he blend perfectly with the mullein on which he’s perching?

These birds are sometimes busily foraging in our meadow, and we don’t even see them until we accidentally flush them out as we pass.
